The Concept of a Language Family
Just like humans have ancestors, languages have “protolanguages.” A Language Family is a group of languages related through descent from a common ancestral tongue.
The Giants: Indo-European Family
This is the largest family in the world. It includes languages from Europe (English, Spanish) and Asia (Urdu, Hindi, Persian, Bengali). This is why you find similar words in English and Urdu, such as “Mother” and “Ma.”
Other Major Families
- Sino-Tibetan: Includes Chinese and Burmese.
- Semitic (Afroasiatic): Includes Arabic and Hebrew.
- Dravidian: Languages like Tamil and Telugu spoken in Southern India.
Why Does It Matter?
Studying language families helps historians track human migration. It shows us that despite our geographical distances, many of us are speaking “dialects” of the same ancient mother tongue.
